MY CITY
MY CITY BARRANQUILLA
I came to barranquilla back in summer,2014 this year marks 4 years i’ve living here. Ever
since then I´ve learned so much about the carribean culture and how people
communicate interract and express themselves in this part of our country.Something
that my family and me have noticed i show much the city has grown, develop and
changed over the curse of these years.
The result of the mixture of thoughts and ways of seeing
life is seen today in its streets: foreign business investment is skyrocketing
and cultural wealth is increasing. This has meant that for some time the
'Arenosa' has become a city in which more and more other capitals of the
country are being watched
From the vendor of scraping (a type of ice cream offered by
street vendors in the most popular areas of the city) to the owner of the best
restaurant have something in common: bid to sell a city that seeks to return to
the splendor of the times in which It was known as the 'Golden Gate of
Colombia', the place through which modernity entered the country.
According to Dinero.com some of the reasons that explain the
succesful economic development are the following:
The three main sectors that pull the city´s economy are port, storage and storage and turism
The three main sectors that pull the city´s economy are port, storage and storage and turism
This sector is driving the development of the region, the
fact that we are preparing to have a navigable river, will allow us to continue
with the signing of FTA and respond to the demands of the current market, which
would increase with the expansion of the Panama Canal.
What is the storage and warehousing sector?
This sector, which corresponds to 21% of the investment
received in the Atlantic in 2014, will continue on the path of growth if we
take into account the availability of 500 hectares of land to build industrial
parks, storage areas, three free zones, land for construction of new companies
and the possibility of private port terminals near the banks of the Magdalena
River.
And about the tourism sector, what initiatives are underway?
The construction of hotels -such as the Hilton Garden Inn
and the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel- is the main protagonist of the
development in Barranquilla. For 2016, the construction of 36 hotels that would
add more than 5,000 rooms in the region is expected. Additionally, the
construction of Puerta Oro, the event and convention center of the Caribbean,
has already begun, which will have a strong and positive impact on this
activity.
What is the city looking for with the new convention center?
The construction of this event center will guarantee other
important moments in the year, and even, that increase the indicators of
tourism in the city other than the Carnival of Barranquilla.
Regarding this, how did the businessmen go with the
carnival?
From the Chamber of Commerce of Barranquilla, we have
managed to advance studies that allow us to affirm that in this festivity every
peso invested can even be doubled.
What industrial initiatives are developed in the city?
Currently the city is working to transform itself and face
the Magdalena River, this requires investments and changes in industrial zones
such as via 40. In this sense, we have tax incentives from the local
government, for companies that move their facilities to industrial parks.
What are these incentives?
For companies that move, a tax exemption for ten years, this
would allow to continue successfully with the transformation plan of
Barranquilla, where it has the project of the Avenue to the River, which will
end in the center of events and conventions Door of Gold. There are also tax
benefits for new companies wishing to open their doors in Barranquilla.
